Fuel Flow Meters: High-Accuracy Consumption Trackers for Marine and Automotive
Quick Answer
Fuel flow meters from Silver Instruments measure diesel, gasoline, biodiesel, and light fuel oil consumption on marine engines and automotive test benches. Oval gear models deliver 0.5 percent of reading accuracy from DN4 to DN25. Coriolis models provide mass flow in kg/h with pulse, 4-20 mA, and RS485 Modbus outputs.
Marine Fuel Flow Measurement
Marine diesel systems have supply and return lines. You cannot measure only the supply flow and call it consumption. The engine returns unused fuel to the tank. Most marine engines need two fuel flow meters. One meter sits on the supply line. A smaller meter sits on the return line. A PLC or flow totalizer subtracts the return flow from the supply flow.
This method works on fishing vessels, tugboats, and small cargo ships in Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines. A typical setup for a 200 kW marine diesel engine uses a DN10 oval gear fuel flow meter on the supply side and a DN6 meter on the return side. Both meters send pulse outputs to a panel display.
In practice, most engineers choose an oval gear fuel flow meter for diesel because it does not need long straight pipe runs. Mount the meter after the lift pump and before the primary fuel filter or after a 60 mesh strainer. Diesel carries particles, water, and air. Air in diesel changes the reading fast. We have seen this on customer sites many times. A good meter fails early because someone installed it at the highest point of the fuel line.
Automotive and Engine Test Bench Use
The same oval gear meters work on vehicle fuel lines and engine test benches. A test bench in Latin America may use a DN4 or DN6 meter for gasoline engines up to 100 kW. For larger diesel engines, a DN10 or DN15 meter is safer. Keep the flow range within the meter range. A meter that is too large loses accuracy at low idle flow.
Automotive test engineers often need pulse output for total fuel used per test cycle. Some need 4-20 mA for fuel rate. Others need RS485 Modbus for a data acquisition system. Silver Instruments can supply a local display or no display if the signal goes to your panel.
Recommended Models and Outputs
Silver Instruments OF series oval gear flow meters handle diesel, gasoline, kerosene, and light fuel oil. Standard accuracy is 0.5 percent of reading and repeatability is 0.2 percent. Sizes go from DN4 to DN25. Flow range examples are DN4 from 1 to 50 liters per hour, DN10 from 10 to 400 liters per hour, and DN15 from 30 to 1200 liters per hour. These ranges shift with fuel viscosity, so confirm your range with our engineers. Wetted parts can be aluminum or stainless steel 316. Stainless steel is better for marine duty and biodiesel blends.
Silver Instruments CM series Coriolis mass flow meters measure mass flow, density, and temperature in one device. They have no moving parts. Use this series for fuel blending, bunker fuel measurement, or engine research where mass data matters. Outputs include 4-20 mA, pulse, and RS485 Modbus.
Standard oval gear fuel flow meters handle fuel temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius. High-temperature versions go to 150 degrees Celsius. Pressure ratings are often 50 bar for stainless steel bodies and around 20 bar for compact aluminum bodies. We can supply IP65 or IP67 enclosures. For gasoline or light crude in enclosed spaces, we can supply Ex d or Ex ia versions. Give us the zone classification and gas group.
Price, Delivery, and Quote Details
Price depends on size, material, output, and certification. A basic aluminum oval gear meter with pulse output is affordable for fleet trials. A stainless steel version with 4-20 mA and RS485 costs more. Coriolis mass fuel meters are the most accurate and the highest price. We ship to Southeast Asia, Oceania, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East eve
