How Does a Micro Motion Flow Meter Work

Quick Answer: A Micro Motion flow meter splits the process fluid into twin vibrating conduits. What Happens Inside the Twin Tubes

The sensor body contains two parallel tubes. A drive coil excites both tubes at their natural frequency. Fluid enters the meter and splits into the two conduits. The tubes vibrate in opposition. With zero flow, the inlet and outlet sides move in phase. With flow, the Coriolis effect creates a time difference at the pickoff sensors. The transmitter records that time difference as a phase shift.

Why Phase Shift Converts to Mass Flow

Because density changes with composition, a volume meter would need a correction factor. A Coriolis meter does not. It measures mass directly. The phase shift is proportional to mass flow rate. Tube frequency gives density. A built in PT100 gives process temperature. One device sends mass flow, density, and temperature over 4-20 mA HART.

In practice, a chemical plant in Thailand uses a DN25 Silver Instruments Coriolis meter on a reactor feed line. The fluid density changes from 0.78 kg/L to 0.93 kg/L across batches. Mass flow stays accurate because the meter does not need volume correction. The meter also ignores fluid conductivity in µS/cm, unlike electromagnetic flow meters.


Installation and Sizing That Most Engineers Skip

Most engineers skip this part during early sizing. The meter needs a full pipe. No gas pockets. No slug flow. Install it so the tubes stay flooded during shutdown. In vertical lines, flow should go upward. In horizontal lines, keep the meter below the pipe if possible. Use a zero calibration after installation.

We have seen this on customer sites many times. A food plant in Malaysia installed a Coriolis meter directly after a piston pump. Pulsating flow created unstable readings at low flow. The fix was simple. We added a small back pressure valve downstream and moved the meter further from the pump discharge. Readings then settled within 0.1 percent of rate.
